CARAMELIZED LEEKS are a great topping for potatoes, sandwiches, pasta and burgers. Similar to using caramelized onions but with a more mild flavor.
Caramelized leeks are divine, they are sweet and rich, not overly crunchy or mushy, kind of similar in texture to if you had put raw green onions in mashed potatoes, but the flavor is a nice delicate onion flavor.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CARAMELIZE LEEKS?
We are cooking the leeks over medium heat to slowly caramelize them. This will take 15-25 minutes depending how browned you prefer your leeks.
I recommend using a small saute pan for the leeks, they may seem like there are too many but it will greatly reduce as they cook. Using a small pan will help protect them from burning once they have reduced in size.
HOW TO USE CARAMELIZED LEEKS:
- 2 medium leeks
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- Trim and thinly slice the leeks, place in a small saute pan with butter
- Cook on medium high heat until the butter is melted and has coated the leeks, then reduce the heat to medium or medium low and saute until caramelized, approximately 15-25 minutes until your desired color and texture..
- Remove from heat and set aside once caramelized.
