This pizza casserole is great because it is super easy, filling and inexpensive – great for feeding a family on a budget! Plus you can add as many of your favorite toppings as you like.

What type of pasta should I use for pizza casserole?

The best pasta you can use is short pasta shapes like penne, rigatoni, or rotini. However, you can use any pasta shape you prefer or have on hand. 

Can I make pizza casserole ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the pizza casserole in advance. Assemble the casserole, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or foil, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours or freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap/foil and bake as directed. If frozen thaw in the refrigerator overnight, remove the coverings, and bake as directed.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 32 oz marinara sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt or more to taste
  • 16 oz pasta such as rotini or penne
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 12 pepperoni slices

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375ºF and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef in a large skillet for 5 minutes or until browned, drain if needed. Add the chopped onion and chopped bell peppers - cook for 5 more minutes until tender.
  • Add marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and salt. Stir to combine. Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the packaging instructions until al dente (the pasta should have a bite). Drain the pasta.
  • Add the pasta to the meat mixture and toss well.
  • Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  • Top with several pepperoni slices then cover the baking dish with foil.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and broil for an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
