This is a bitter sweet post. My fellow food bloggers and I are coming together to honor a truly wonderful gal, Joan, the creator of Chocolate, Chocolate and More! Last week she unexpectedly passed away of a heart attack at age 49.

I was lucky enough to spend time with Joan on a Caribbean cruise last January (she is the tall blonde in the floppy hat in the photo below). Joan was the type of person that you could meet and immediately feel like you’d been friends for years. She definitely had the gift of gab and had a way of making you feel welcome.

#ChocolateForJoan

She had a sweet southern drawl and larger than life joyful laugh that could be heard a mile away!

And she LOVED her chocolate {obviously}! She spent the entire week searching for an amazing chocolate dessert on the cruise, without luck. We spent a few hours at the airport waiting for our flights home and decided to check out the airport restaurant. Joan ordered 4 triple chocolate mousse shots and to our surprise they were Amazing! We were so tickled that after a week long search she found her luscious chocolate dessert at the airport!

Joan was also known for keeping a package of hot cocoa powder in her purse to add to her coffee. So this Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe is my way of remembering such a sweet, chocolaty gal! Oh, she also liked her Kahlua, so I made a special mug of Spiked Hot Cocoa for her.

Here’s to you, Joan. May it rain down chocolate chips in heaven.

Joan left behind three young kids that she was absolutely devoted to. Please visit her CC&More Facebook page and her blog, Chocolate, Chocolate and More! as a way to show support.

Have some chocolate today for Joan . . . and it just so happens to be National Chocolate Day {Joan’s Favorite Day!} For more chocolate recipes created for Joan, check out the hashtags: #ChocolateForJoan and #ChocolateEveryDamnDay on social media.

This is absolutely perfect, Nicole! I’d forgotten about her “just in case” packets of cocoa for her coffee. I’m glad we were all able to spend so much time together this year.

This hot cocoa mix looks luscious. How do I prepare a mug of goodness? Mix with water or milk? How much?

Tip of the mug to Joan. I am a reader, not a blogger, so I never had the pleasure of knowing her. Joan’s positive spirit always showed through her posts. She will be missed.

Thanks Sheri! I always make hot cocoa with milk but you could use water in a pinch. The amount is a matter of preference, I use 4-5 Tablespoons per mug because I like it extra chocolaty! And yes, Joan will most definitely be missed by so many. Thanks for visiting and commenting 🙂

Absolutely! I don’t know if I can ever make a chocolate recipe without thinking about her again.

This sounds delish, I’m glad someone already asked about how to prepare it. How many cups of cocoa would this make? I’m thinking of making this up for cocoa gifts with a mini booze bottle for the teachers and principals at my son’s school. Good knows they deserve to chill this holiday. lol I’d like to figure out how much to make. Thanks in advance!

Hi Melissa! Oh, that is such a great idea. You are right, they deserve time off and a stiff drink 😀 This recipe will yield enough to make about 12 cups of cocoa. Of course, that depends on how much dry mix and liquid each person uses. But assuming each uses 5 Tb mix per serving…it would be just over 12 servings total. Hope that helps.

Seems as though this recipe was somehow a previously designed recipe from before the 70s and introduced to me by my wonderful roommate from Omaha Nebr. She woukd make an entire huge Tupperware container of this cocoa drink every fall and use a colorful Fiestaware cup to scoop it out and into our cocoa mugs.
Im sorry this woman passed but she did not develope this mix. My friends grandma had written it onto a cute recipe card from years ago.
