Cooking Corned Beef In A Slow Cooker

The Crockpot is the best way to cook your corned beef and cabbage. Corned beef brisket can get rubbery if cooked to high. The low constant heat of a slow cooker will get you that falling apart, amazingly tender corned beef. It does take some planning and time. If you are low on time I got you covered with this Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Corned Beef Recipe. But if you have the time, make your corned beef in the slow cooker.

How To Make Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage with Red Potatoes, Onion and Carrots

  1. Place onions, corned beef, season packet ingredients, carrots, potatoes, beer and water in slow cooker.
  2. Cook on low for 9 hours.
  3. Add the cabbage and cook on high for 1-1.5 hours.

Can You Overcook Corned Beef

Yes, you can over cook anything really. But it would take a long time to overcook corned beef in the crockpot. Corned beef can easily cook on low for 10-12 hours without issues. If you cook it longer it will eventually begin to disintegrate.

Ingredients Needed For Slow Cooker Corned Beef Brisket

  • Corned Beef
  • Sweet Onion
  • Carrots
  • Small Red Potatoes
  • Beer
  • Green Cabbage

What cut of corned beef is best for the crockpot?

Do I need to rinse corned beef before cooking?

Optional.
Rinse if you want less salty results
Skip rinsing for stronger traditional flavor

Do I use the spice packet?

Yes, unless you’re making your own seasoning. The packet is designed for that specific cut and works well in the crockpot.

How much liquid should I add?

Enough to come about halfway up the meat.
Common liquids:
Water
Beef broth
Beer (stout or lager)
Many people do a combo (broth + beer).

How long do I cook it?

Low: 8–10 hours (best texture)
High: 4–5 hours
Cook until fork-tender.

How do I slice corned beef so it’s tender?

Always slice against the grain. This makes a huge difference.

Why is my corned beef tough?

Usually undercooked.
It needs long, slow heat
Keep cooking until it’s tender, it will relax, not dry out.

    1. I often use white grape juice when recipes call for beer. I’m about to try it tonight. I’ll post how it turns out.

  2. I’m cooking it on high, with beef broth and not beer! How much time would you say I need to let it cook?
