Homemade Sugar Body Scrub

I love making Homemade Body Scrubs at home.  It is quick, easy and works just as well as the expensive store bought variety.

Plus, sugar scrubs are perfect for giving as homemade gifts to friends and family.   Fill a jar with your sparkling sugar scrub.  Add a tag and ribbon to complete your fancy homemade gift!

Usually when I am making a homemade body scrub, I just stir the ingredients together and call it good.  Feel free to do the quick stir and done method.

This time I decided to try something different.  I whipped the coconut oil then added the sugar and vanilla.  I like how it turned out.  The sugar scrub feels creamier and fluffier than usual.

Of course, you have to use coconut oil in its solid form to whip it and keep the sugar scrub in a cool place.  Otherwise the coconut oil will melt.

No worries though, if it melts the scrub will work just as well.

Use your whisk attachment on your mixer and whip 1/2 cup solid coconut oil for about 10 minutes.  Stop to scrape down the sides after 5 minutes.

Add 1 cup white sugar and the seeds from 1 vanilla pod.  Mix for another 1-2 minutes.  Transfer to an air tight container until ready for use.

To prep the vanilla, split the pod lengthwise and scrape all of the tiny black seeds out with the tip of your knife.

I gently heated my leftover pod with some milk and sugar for a homemade vanilla coffee creamer.

  3. I made this and must say this is the best scrub I have tried. I have made other scrubs like this but nothing beats how fluffy the finished product is. Usually the homemade scrubs are an oily mess or hard as a brick and you can’t scoop it out. Thanks for the recipe.

    1. I just made sugar and salt scrubs using coconut oil and noticed that they are VERY hard. (Wished I’d seen this recipe first!) I’m assuming that it’s just the whipping it that fixes this problem. I will try it next time. In the meantime, I am wondering if you’ve found that the hard version is still usable with scooping with a spoon or heating it up before using. (Just gave a bunch for gifts and am hoping to be able to pass along a fix for those I gave it to!) Thanks!

    2. Even whipped the coconut oil will get solid when cold. I keep my coconut oil scrubs in glass jars and just run the jar under hot water to warm it before use. That will work. Or next time you make a scrub you can sub half of the coconut oil for a liquid oil such as grapeseed oil.

    1. Hi Nikki! I haven’t tried brown sugar yet. But I have seen many recipe around the web that do use brown sugar. So I assume it will work just fine 🙂

  4. Hello!

Going to give this a try this weekend. How much does this recipe make? We are making them as favors for a shower 🙂

    Tks!

    Cory

    1. Hi Cory! This recipe makes 1½-1¾ cups of sugar scrub. {depending how fluffy you get the coconut oil}. And just a reminder that the scrub does need to be stored in a cool area. I wouldn’t want your favors to get all melty. Have a great weekend 😀

    1. Thanks Katherine! The scrubs last a long time. I’m still using a batch that I made about 6 months ago and it works just as well as the first day.

  5. Was wondering if there was a shelf life to this if I give it as a gift I don’t want it to spoil

    1. Hi Ashley! I am still using a batch from 6 months ago. I’ve never had a batch of scrub go bad yet. So, I’d say the scrub will stay good for 6 months (at least)!

  6. Just made this! Now I just have to remember to use it in the shower, and not to just eat it instead 😉

    1. Haha, it does smell good enough to eat. And, I guess you could if you wanted to 😉

  7. I love this scrub! ~~ and I’ve made it for several friends and they enjoy it also! I’m now looking for an easy melt and pour soap recipe to make with a glycerin base.

Thanks for all the lovely ideas – I like opening up my email and reading another great idea or recipe you’ve posted

    1. Thanks so much, Robin! I just love getting comments like this. Good luck with the soap. I haven’t been brave enough to try making my own soap yet. I appreciate your kind words 🙂

  8. I love your site and have really enjoyed this recipe, but there is an Etsy listing that seems to be using your photo. It might just be my mistake but i figured your work should stay yours. Check it out…

    1. Thanks for the heads up, Erinn! I’m glad you enjoyed this recipe 😀

  9. Hi!

I just recently started looking into making scrubs as hobby but I’m stuck when it comes to trying to find the best (yet pocket friendly) ingredients.
Your recipe looks amazing & I really want to try it out.

What coconut oil brand did you use, if you don’t mind me asking?

    1. I use the Trader Joe’s brand. It is budget friendly and smells great!

    1. I buy my vanilla beans at Trader Joes. But, you can find them at most grocery stores in the spice area.

    2. I buy my vanilla beans at Trader Joes. But you can find them at most grocery stores in the spice area.

    1. Hi Francis! Yes, just make sure the oils are safe to use on skin or (cosmetic grade).

  10. Hi this sounds lovely. Just wondering if it would still work using some vanilla extract instead of vanilla pod seeds?

    1. That may work. But, I have never tried. So I can’t say for sure.

    2. I just made this today and used vanilla extract in place of the beans – mainly because I’m lazy and didn’t want to go to the store. I added 1/4 tsp to the oil while I was whipping it and it seems to be working ok. Hope this helps.

    1. This will keep for at least 6 months. As long as it is kept in a clean airtight container.

  11. Wow I love this site. I love everything coconut. Coconut is so heal7ng to the body. I drink coconut milk and water everyday and I never have dairy. It has helped me to loose so much weight. Happy………

  12. Awesome recipes, I can’t wait to try. I am studying to be a massage therapist and I bet my clients will love it! I collect Fire King glassware…. Do you realize how rare that three cornered measuring cup is? Beautiful.

  13. Hi! I want to make this for Mother’s Day gifts and I was wondering if I could substitute vanilla seeds for vanilla extract? Will it work just as well?

    1. I think a little splash of extract could work. You will not be able to use too much because the sugar will dissolve in a liquid. And I can’t say how that would affect the shelf-life either.

  14. I plan on making this scrub for christmas gifts. I notice you say these have to be stored in a cool area… should i tell everyone i gift these to keep it in the fridge ? or where is an appropriate place?

    1. The coconut oil would get too firm in the fridge. I just recommend not storing it next to the heater vent is all.
