This is one of my favorite desserts from childhood. There is just something about the creamy rice sprinkled with cinnamon that takes me back to a simpler time. Not only is this quick and easy, it is fairly healthy too.
Is Rice Pudding The Same As Tapioca Pudding?
No. While they are both prepared with similar ingredients, tapioca pudding is made with tapioca pearls not rice.
Ingredients Needed (screenshot for grocery list)
- Milk
- Jasmine Rice
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Salt
- Vanilla
How To Make Stovetop Rice Pudding
- Combine milk, rice, sugar, cinnamon and salt in a 5-quart pot.
- Bring mixture to a boil over medium/high heat. Reduce heat to medium/low.
- Cook (uncovered) until the pudding is thick and creamy, stirring frequently, about 30 to 35 minutes. Stir almost constantly during the last 5 to 10 minutes to prevent pudding from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Keep in mind, the pudding will thicken more as it cools.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
- Serve hot or cold.

- 3/4 cup jasmine rice
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
Instructions
- Combine milk, rice, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a 5-quart pot.
- Bring mixture to a boil over medium/high heat. Reduce heat to medium/low.
- Cook (uncovered) until the pudding is thick and creamy, stirring frequently, about 30 to 35 minutes. Stir almost constantly during the last 5 to 10 minutes to prevent pudding from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Keep in mind, the pudding will thicken more as it cools.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
- Serve hot or cold.
Notes
If the pudding thickens up too much, stir in more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
