Bbq Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Barbecue Pulled Pork Sandwiches are one of those things I tend to crave during the summer months. That is why this Slow Cooker Apple Barbeque Pulled Pork is so great. You can make the pulled pork in the crockpot without heating up the entire house.
Make the slaw, layer it up on a bun and enjoy!

Slow Cooker Apple Barbeque Pulled Pork
This Slow Cooker Apple Barbeque Pulled Pork is a uniquely flavored pulled pork recipe. The sweet complex homemade barbecue sauce with the rich fatty pork makes this dinner amazing!
Ingredients
- Pork
- 4-5 lb Bone-In Pork Shoulder Roast
- 1 large Onion
- 2 Tb Salt
- 2 Tb Pepper
- 2 Tb Olive Oil
- Cooking Liquid
- 2 cups Fresh Pressed Apple Juice*
- 1/4 cup Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (I use Bragg)
- 1 Tb Sea Salt
- 1 Tb Pepper
- 1/2 cup Organic Ketchup
- 1/2 Tb Unsulphured Molasses
- 2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 5 Garlic Cloves (chopped)
- 2 Tb Whole Grain Dijon Mustard
- 2 Tb Honey
- Bbq Sauce
- 2 cups Strained Cooking Liquid
- 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup Organic Ketchup
Instructions
- Cover and cook on high heat for 6-7 hours or on low heat for 8-9 hours.
- Once the pork is done and falling off the bone, remove from the slow cooker.
- Transfer pork to a cutting board and pull apart.
Bbq Sauce
- Before making the sauce I use a couple of slices of old bread to soak up some of the pork fat off of the top of the cooking liquid then discard fatty bread slices. (optional)
- Transfer 2 cups of strained cooking liquid to a small saucepan and add the brown sugar and ketchup. (add a bit more brown sugar for a sweet sauce)
- Bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Cook for approximately 10 minutes or until thickened, stir regularly.
- This will be enough sauce for half of the pulled pork. If you will be eating all of the pork as bbq, double this sauce recipe.
Toss half of the pulled pork with the sauce and eat as is or on a sandwich roll/bun.
Notes
*Fresh Pressed or Not From Concentrate Apple Juice can be found in the refrigerated juice grocery section. I use Trader Joe's brand or Simply Apple brand.

Yum Nicole! My slow cooker is my best friend and bbq is one of my favorite things to make! I’ll have to try this recipe!
Nicole Harris says
I need to use my slow cooker more often. If I’m being totally honest, the reason I don’t use it more is because I HATE cleaning it afterwards! Enjoy and have a great weekend, Tanya!
Tommy says
You might try a slow cooker liner, Split Pea Soup? No problem
Nicole Harris says
My mom swears by those slow cooker liners! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

Here on Hawaii, we put our cooker out on the back Lanai… even though it doesn’t get really hot here – generally low 80’s… at our altitude.

Just found this on Google, it looks amazing. I’m going to make this tomorrow.
Lee says
I made this for about 15 adults and 8 children this weekend. I’ve made a few variations of crock pot pulled pork and I think this one may be the winner. I did cook the pork overnight and then shredded in the morning snd let cook a little while in the retained liquid and homemade barbecue sauce at the end. For starters, cooking it in the apple cider vs a a BBQ sauce all day gives it a crisper flavor. I never felt the sauce overpowered the meat which I feel sometimes in slow cooked meals. It was a huge hit and although it had a lot of apple juice and apple cider, I would guess the total amount of sugar may be less.
Nicole Harris says
Thanks Lee, I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed this recipe! I prefer a more mild flavored sauce on my meat too. Have a lovely week 🙂

monique kirkby says
hi there this looks amazing! could you use it on the stove if you don’t have a slow cooker? regards monique
Nicole Harris says
Hi Monique! You can make this on the stove instead. I have only made mine in a slow cooker so I cannot say for sure how long it will take to cook. Keep it at a low simmer until the pork is tender. I wouldn’t recommend cooking this on the stove top if you are not home because it is something you will need to keep an eye on. Enjoy!

Yummy, this is on our to make list this week. One question, what size slow cooker are you using for this recipe?
Nicole Harris says
Hi Rebecca! I use a 6 quart slow cooker. Thanks for asking, I should list that in my slow cooker recipes from now on. Have a great week!
Rebecca Brewer says
Thanks!

Dear Nicole,
Just tried this recipe and EVERYONE loved it! I have a large crock pot, so i doubled the cooking liquid recipe so that the liquid would come half-way up the pork. I cannot wait to make this again. My son loved it so much he checked-out your blog for other recipes and promptly made the Nutella dip. Looking forward to more great recipes from you.

I made this for my family and they loved it! The meat had so much flavor that we didn’t even use sauce. Thank you, thank you!
Nicole Harris says
Awesome! So happy to hear that you loved it 😀
Anne says
Any suggestions for substituting the ketchup (I have a tomato allergy)
Nicole Harris says
You can always try omitting the ketchup, the sauce will not be as thick though. Or, here is a link to How To Make Tomato Free Ketchup >> http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Tomato-Free-Ketchup I’ve never tried this personally but it’s worth a shot 🙂

It looks like the instructions to this recipe are now missing. Could you re-add? This is one of my favorite recipes and I neglected to save it!

Oh no! I had an issue with my recipes a while back and thought they had all been fixed. I’ll have to figure out a way to access the old directs and I will try to fix this recipe asap. Thanks for letting me know 🙂

Nicole Harris says
Yes, apologies. The recipe was erased when transferring my site info over to a new program. I’ve been trying to tack down the recipe, as they say anything posted on the internet is there forever…hopefully 🙂
