Curled up under a soft cozy blanket with a steaming cup of cocoa radiating heat, that is where you can find me all winter long. I love a good cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows on top, of course. In the past I used the store bought packets, not realizing just how ridiculously simple and inexpensive it is to make hot cocoa mix.
Not only is homemade cocoa mix easy to make, it tastes great and you have complete control over the ingredients. My mix recipe has less sugar than most because I prefer a rich chocolaty cocoa. I also included a bit of Ovaltine because it adds a slight malty flavor in the background. But feel free to omit this ingredient if you are not a fan. Most cocoa recipes call for powdered milk but I left this ingredient out because I didn’t think it added much to the flavor. I also found that the powdered milk did not fully dissolve and clumps settled at the bottom of my mug . . . Yuck!
Ingredients:1 cup Powdered Sugar
1 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/2 cup Powdered Coffee Creamer
1/2 cup Chocolate Malt OvaltineThoroughly mix all ingredients, I use a fork to combine powders. Transfer to an air tight container and use within three months.Feel free to change the measurements to fit your tastes. If you prefer a sweet dessert hot cocoa, increase the amount of powdered sugar. Flavored coffee creamer instead of plain would make a wonderful cup of cocoa as well.

When you are in the mood for a toasty treat, just heat your desired amount of milk. Add 3-4 tablespoons of cocoa mix per 1 cup of milk. What goes best with your very own hot cocoa blend?
