Holiday Cranberry Apple Sauce

I prefer my cranberry sauce to be chunky and full of different flavors and textures.  This recipe for Holiday Cranberry Apple Sauce is exactly that.  Tart cranberries blended with sweet apples and vibrant citrus.  I eat this straight from the bowl as a fruity dessert.deep red cranberry sauce topped with fresh cranberries and orange zest in clear glass dishPin

 

I know, I know . . . Thanksgiving has already passed so most of you are done with cranberry sauce.  But if you eat turkey for Christmas dinner, like my family does, this recipe is just in time.  Or, add extra apples and this becomes more of an applesauce recipe.

 
 
Ingredients:
 

1 cup Sugar
12 oz Cranberries
Zest & Juice of 1 Orange
1 cup fresh pressed Apple Juice
1 large Apple (I use Honeycrisp)

Wash and inspect your cranberries (sometimes you’ll find funky berries hiding in there).  Chop apple, you can peel or not, I leave the peel on.  Zest and juice your orange.  Then just dump all the ingredients into a pot and begin cooking on medium heat, stirring occasionally.  Once the sauce begins to boil and the cranberries burst decrease heat.  Continue to stir and cook until the sauce has thickened, about twenty minutes.  Be aware that the sauce will become a little thicker once it has cooled.  This recipe makes approximately five cups of cranberry sauce.

You can make many variations depending on your personal tastes.  Add extra apples or more orange.  The sugar can be replaced by honey or other sweeteners.  Cranberry juice or water can be added instead of the apple juice.  This really is such a simple side dish to make with so many flavor possibilities.

  1. This might seem like a silly question, but how does this taste the next day? I was thinking about making it tonight to save time for tomorrow, but I wasn’t sure if the flavor would be the same.
