There are few things I enjoy more than a toasty bagel topped with cream cheese, smoked salmon and lemon. Except maybe hummus, I love hummus. So, I brought two of my favorites together with this Creamy Hummus Bagel Spread.

We are not slathering bagels with just plain hummus. This spread is made with cream cheese and chickpeas to create a creamy texture with the subtle hummus flavor.

I have been obsessed with smoked salmon bagels ever since I went on my first Caribbean cruise when I was 22 years old (that was, ahem, 15 or so years ago!). Breakfast and lunch I would go to the buffet and get myself a bagel slathered with cream cheese, topped with smoked salmon lox, lemon and capers. And yes, between the bagels and the piña coladas I may have gained about 10 pounds during that 7 day cruise! I had to wear sweat pants on the way home. I no longer eat bagels twice a day. In fact, I am on a low carb diet so any bread indulgences are few and far between. Eating nothing but bread and dairy is just not an option now that I’m pushing 40! But every now and then, let us indulge a little. A life without bagels is not the kind of life I want to live.

Eat the bagels. Drink the cocktails. Bask in the the sun. Everything in moderation, right? Right.

Creamy Hummus Bagel Spread Recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This Creamy Hummus Bagel Spread Recipe brings a new twist to breakfast while replacing some of the cream cheese with high protein chickpeas! Top with Everything Bagel seasoning blend for the ultimate bagel flavor experience!

Ingredients

  • 15 ounces Low Sodium Garbanzo Beans, (drained and rinsed)
  • 4 ounces Cream Cheese
  • Zest of 1 Lemon
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • 2 Tablespoons Tahini
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • Everything Bagel Spice Blend, (for topping)
  • Olive Oil, (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In blender or food processor, process garbanzo beans, cream cheese, lemon zest, lemon juice, tahini and salt until creamy and smooth.
  2. Transfer to serving dish. Top with everything bagel spice and olive oil. Serve with crackers, vegetables and/or bagels.
